Habs would like to extend Semin to 4 years at $4,000,000.
Looking at the salaries recent young starts received by extension, and Semin's drop in production over the past two years, he can't command top dollar anymore. The amount offered is mid range. He has been a start this year, and watched a few games from the press box while healthy. Habs hope he can keep at least a 2.5 PPG pace over the next 4 years to help this team with lots of young talent.
Alexander Semin - Age 27 (28 soon)
2011-2012 Stats: Points 123.4 - PPG 2.33 - GP 53 - Rank: (36th LW and 41st RW) 2010-2011 Stats: Points 206.35 - PPG 3.17 - GP 65 2009-2010 Stats: Points 306.7 - PPG 4.2 - GP 73
Recent Extensions: Jamie Benn got $5,500,000 (3.5 PPG - 8th LW at the time of extension) James Neal got 5,250,000 (3.43 PPG - Currently 4th LW) Zach Parise got $6,100,000 (2.88 PPG - 13th LW at the time of extension)
* Added Note: Yeah, they guy was great when Ovy was fantastic. Likely won't have that great of a teammate wherever he ends up next year. He could sign with the Habs and be forced into mediocrity...

I would say that's a bit low..But I'll wait and see what others have to say before deciding.

Ya I would think that's a bit low. He's having an off year. He should get at least $5m.

It's tough to decide. Erik Karlsson is only worth $4,000,000.

Erik Karlsson should not really be a comparable in this instance. He is a second year player who had a good first season but who would've known that he would have been this good. The contract extension by Ottawa took place on October 31st which is before this league even started accumulating points. It just turned out in Ottawa's advantage. Semin however has had very good seasons and is just having an off-year, probably because the Caps aren't really doing well. 4 Mill for Semin just doesn't seem justified to me. For that reason I will decline.
(Rejected 1-0)

Karlsson is a d-man. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
Rejected 0-2

this is a tough one for me, yes purely based on potential talent semin should command more money, but in this league and this year, he has not put up the points to command the $5mil range which is what i think NJ and the LEAFS see him at, the $4 mil number doesnt seem all that low for me, especially considering he is purely an offensive player who seems to play off whoever he is on a line with (missing backstrom all year hurts his stats as well) i want to see what other people think here, cus this is a tough call for me...

Hmm, sorry for not responding sooner guys I have been thinking about this for a little while now... I think that Semin is worth more, however so far in our pool the contracts have been based off of production. After this season many players will be inflated as they will be compared to players who are picked in OUR free agency. It will no longer be compared to NHL contracts, but for this season and given that Semin is a UFA at seasons end and still has the potential to walk to the KHL (A strong possibility), I feel that 4 mil is okay. No one has a clue where he will be next year as of right now so it is just as much as a gamble as it is a win.
I Approve 1-2 But everyone in the TAB gets a say so lets see how this plays out.

ill put it to 2-2, $4mil is not that bad, and like pens said giving him 4 years may be a mistake once we see what he does in the offseason after this disastrous season from the caps, gonna need more people to vote here vote is at 2-2

Thought about it a lot and it seems a little low to me. Based on where i see Semins floor in terms of production along with his ceiling this salary reflects the floor in my mind.
Also i feel the resigns typically work out to a slight discount to the owner as opposed to Free Agent prices i just feel this is well below even a starting offer on Semin in free agency so i just see this gap as being too big in this case.
Not gunna say what i feel it should be brought up to and it may not even be that much but i just feel the gap of salary vs. market demand price is very large in this case.
Rejected 2-3 but looking forward to see how it turns out with more votes.

I might have a trade lined up for Semin without the extension, so no problem if this falls through. I would appreciate the votes so I know if I can make the trade before the deadline. Or can I make the trade and retract this offer?

Don't think you can retract...Have to wait for Pens to confirm. But, should just hold out to see how the other votes fall, it will be done before Monday.

Habs, you can not veto this yourself. However for this circumstance I am going to make one exception.
If the vote is not complete (ie. 3-3 or 2-3) on sunday at noon, Habs has the option to veto this contract extension. The reason being it has been a long time, and if he has a trade lined up for the just in case we can be fair for him.
So Sunday at noon eastern time is the deadline for this extension.
* Another note, if it is 3-3 Habs does not have the option to accept the contract, but only to veto it.
Thanks guys, and try to stay active... At least once a week and pay attention for the deadline!
Good luck,
GO PENS GO
