The Senators are looking to sign their top dman Erik Karlsson, whos coming up for RFA status at end of year Offer- 4 years at $4,000,000-169 fan pts (last year and this yr combined) Comparables Luke Schenn-$3,600,000-157 fan pts Tyler Myers-$5,500,000 168 fan pts Kristopher Letang-$3,500,000 275 fan pts Jack Johnson-$4,357,143 180 fan pts
Sens feel 4 mil is a very reasonable number for the player that karlsson is now and what he will be at the end of this contract. Myers Schenn Letang and Johnson all signed extensions at the same point that Karlsson is at now. Letang seems to be the best comparable as both are very offensively talented, and both were coming off career years. Also consider that Johnsons contract is for 7 years, and Myers has won a Calder and plays both ends of the ice which makes him more valuable then Karlsson. The fan pts comparable tells the whole story as despite leading the league in pts, he isnt leading on fantrax which matters the most in this league

We should have a discussion about extensions in this leagues first year.
The problem is we have no baseline as there was no bidding to detrmine the market in this league. NHL salaries don't relate to their worth in fantasy leagues. So the question is can we consider what we would anticipate a player to receive in free agency in this league? I am pretty sure Karlsson would get an offer in the 5 million range in this league, even if they had to give up a 1st and 2nd due to the RFA tag.

our baseline has been set as we compare the player in the extension to what other players have received in the league, so i compared what schenn letang myers etc got, based on fan pts karlsson should receive somewhere along the lines of the players i listed as "in this league" he is not as valuable as these guys are

Our baseline has not been set as we have not had free agency. And the only value in this league is fantasy points. So far this year, he would rank second on that list in fantasy points per game.
It is tough to use NHL contracts for comparison when they have nothing to do with their fantasy value. That is why we should discuss how we evalaute the extensions in the first year.

I personally think that Karlsson is a beast sure, but he is also on the worst team in the NHL that is just on fire right now. That line will slow down (Spezza in particular, he averages 65 games a year) and Karlsson will go with him.
Also have to remember that Karlsson is an RFA so contracts tend to be lower as the sens has all the power, sometimes waiting is a good idea when a player is hot. However, anyone who knows the senators really well will know that Karlsson still has a lot to learn. He is not that great defensively (getting better). He does not get many hits, blocked shots, PIM's. So essentially when the senators top line slows down (Greening?) Karlsson will go with them as he is purely an offensive player.
Other D men, like letang Schenn Phaneuf all gain extra points from other categories so when there team is not scoring lots they are still accumulating points. Anderson is not a great goalie so Karlsson will like also be a minus player and to add to that he will be up against other top lines as the senators D is young and full of gaps. Kuba right now is Karlsson's partner and he sucks (lets be honest), he is leading the FA pool right now in fan points and one of the top in the league, if you can realize he will fall off you can be reasonably assured that Karlsson will fall off.
Maybe Karlsson is being slightly under paid (.5 mil) but I mean it is not that big of a gap for me to say no, for that reason I approve.
(1-0)

Approve (3-0) Valid points all around. 4 Mil - 5 mil is where I would put him at and being a little low makes up for him being on a crappy team. lol

I knew it then. People let it pass because it was early and there were no good baselines. I find it funny that my Semin extension was denied at the same salary.
