Dallas would like to sign Ryan Getzlaf to a 3 year contract extension at $7 million per (2015-2016).
For a player like Getzlaf there is no sense in comparing his stats to others as he is one of the top C in the game and deserves to be paid like them. His FP/G for this year is 4.26 compared to last year’s 2.59 (which is why the contract isn't $7.5 million per).
Here is a list of the top C in the game today with their salaries (not sure which, if any, were signed in this league).
Pavel Datsyuk - $6,700,000 (2013-2014) John Tavares $5,500,000 (2016-2017) Anze Kopitar $6,800,000 (2015 - 2016) Patrick Kane - $6,300,000 (2014-2015) Steven Stamkos $7,500,000 (2015-2016) Eric Staal - $8,250,000 (15-16) Evgeni Malkin $8,700,000 (13-14) Jonathan Toews $6,300,000 (2014-2015) Jason Spezza $7,000,000 (2014-15) Anze Kopitar $6,800,000 (2015 - 2016)

Went into this thread saying "If its under 7 Million i'm rejecting" but well done on giving him a justified amount.

Jeff Carter (LAK-C) $6,600,000 (2015-2016) Logan Couture (C/LW-SJ) $6,800,000 (2015-2016)
These guys were signed last offseason. Not as god as Getz, but we don't see too many studs hit UFA so it is tough to gauge. Crosby got $9.7 million, but he is still a full PPG higher than Getz.
Approve (2-0) for a lack of a good comparison, as I think it's a little low. 4.09 PPG two years ago and 3.84 three years ago.

I was really hoping to compare to players who were re-signed as opposed to UFA because teams overpay just to get the player. Thanks for the input.

They aren't overpaying, they are establishing the market. The point of extending players isn't to get a discount for the GM.

That may be your opinion but I have to disagree. I don't think teams necessarily establish a market for the top end players when they engage in bidding wars during UFA. I think bidding wars inflate salaries and eventually those large, long-term contracts signed during UFA make players unwanted in their own market. I do think Getzlaf is a better player than both of the players you listed but their contracts are above market value in my opinion.

The market is what people are willing to pay, not what you are willing to pay. A bidding war establishes the market well as it shows just how much at least two GMs are willing to pay. And we are just talking fantasy market, not their 'own market'. Real life NHL contracts have no relation at all to fantasy value.
